FAQ

How does Second Skin Protection work? What are the benefits of Second Skin Protection plasters?

Second Skin Protection plasters have a 100% waterproof yet breathable backing to protect the wound from the environment, while the hydrocolloid adhesive absorbs wound fluids and creates moist healing conditions for faster healing. With its extra strong hold it protects over several days. The dressing is ultra-thin and flexible making it ideal for difficult to dress areas such as knees and elbows.

Do the plasters contain (an) active ingredient(s)?

No, there is no ‘active’ or ‘medicinal’ ingredient in the Second Skin Protection plasters. Nevertheless, the plasters accelerate healing thanks to its hydrocolloid technology. When in contact with wound fluid it forms a viscous gel and creates moist wound healing conditions which are known to accelerate healing and reduce the risk of scarring.

Why can the plaster be directly applied to the wound without any wound pad or compress?

Second Skin Protection plaster contain hydrocolloid particles that absorb fluid (exudate) from the wound. When the hydrocolloid dressing comes into contact with wound exudate, it forms a viscous gel that absorbs exudate but does not adhere to the wound. It can be visible as the ‘healing capsule’, a whitish/opaque bubble that can appear over the wound. The wound is kept moist while excess moisture evaporates through the semi-permeable top film.

Is it ok if the wound/healing capsule turns yellow?

The hydrocolloid particles absorb wound fluid, swell and liquify in the area over the wound, resulting in a whitish-yellow bubble ‘healing capsule’ visible from the outside. It can appear yellow, greenish to brownish depending on the wound conditions. The colour and smell of the gel should under no circumstances be mistaken for pus. Also, if the hydrocolloid dressing is removed with the bubble/ healing capsule present, the hydrocolloid is still liquified and might remain gel-like on the wound. This often has a yellowish appearance and indicates the mode of action/ healing process – it is no pus or a sign of an infection (these are e.g., redness, heat, pain). If in doubt, remove the plaster and seek medical device.

For what types of wounds can I use Second Skin Protection?

As a hydrocolloid the dressing is suitable for different types of low to moderate exuding wounds and is thus intended to be used on minor everyday wounds such as scratches, cuts and abrasions. The flexibility of the dressing makes it especially suitable for such wounds in difficult-to-dress areas like elbows or knees.

    Elastoplast - Didn’t disappoint
As a lady in her 50s, minor wounds seem to take ages to heal. Put this on a recurring arm scratch and it did as promised. Very discreet and you don’t realise you have it on.

Great addition to the first aid
My son hurt his knee whilst playing on his bike. He had a cut to his elbow, so we applied the elastoplast skin protector. I'm not sure whether it healed faster than usual but it certainly kept it protected so it healed as it should. When run out will stock up with more of these plasters.
